It was a cold night in WashingtonDC, and I was heading back to the hotel when a man approached me. He asked me for some money so he could get something to eat. I'd read the signsDon't give money to beggars. So I shook my head and kept marching.
I wasn't prepared for a reply, but he said, I really am homeless and I really am hungry! You can come with me and watch me eat But I kept on marching.
The incident bothered me for the rest of the week. I had money in my pocket and it wouldn't have killed me to hand over a dollar or two even if he had been lying. On a freezing cold night, I still assumed the worst of a fellow human being.
Flying back to Anchorage, I couldn't help thinking of him. I tried to seek excuses for my failure to help by assuming government agencies, churches and charities were there to feed him.Besides, you're not supposed to give money to beggars.
Somewhere over Seattle, I started to write my weekly garden column for The Anchorage
Daily News. Out of the blue, I came up with an idea. Bean's Cafe, the soup kitchen in
Anchorage, feeds hundreds of hungry Alaskans every day. Why not try to get all my readers to plant one row in their gardens devoted to Bean's?
Before long my idea took_off. People would fax me or call when they took something in. Those who only grew flowers donated them. Food for the spirit. And relief for my conscience.
As more and more people started working with the Plant a Row concept, many companies gave free seeds to customers and displayed the logo, which also arose in national gardening publications. Row markers with the Plant a Row logo were distributed to gardeners to set apart their Row for the Hungry
It is unexpected that millions of Americans are threatened by hunger. If every gardener in Americaand we're seventy million strongplants one row for the hungry, we can lower the number of neighbours who don't have enough to eat. Maybe then I will stop feeling guilty about abandoning a hungry man I could have helped.

Think about all the plastic in our lives like plastic bagsplastic cups and plastic plates.Alsothink about those forks and spoons in your school cafeteria. They may probably be plastic. For better or for worseplastic seems to be everywhereeven places that might be hundreds of miles from the nearest human settlement.
Back in the 1990sa man named Charles Moore discovered a huge floating island of plastic in the North Pacific Oceantons and tons of floating debris (Ƭ) and garbage.Since thenfour more floating islands of plastic have been discovered in other parts of the world.NowMoore saysthe island that he discovered is spreading much farther than he expected. He made that discovery during a 30day research expedition.
They found a lot more plastic farther away from the area that's called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch than they had ever seensaid Marietta Franciswho is the executive director of the AMRIan institute that Moore created to investigate the floating plastic problem. They ran across it faster than expected.Right nowexperts say they are not sure what all this plastic is doing to the health of our oceans or our own healthfor that matter. They suspect that small fish are eating tiny bits of the plasticand that those tiny little bits are getting into bigger fish when the bigger fish eat the small fish.Of coursewe're at the top of the food chainmost of the timeat least. So that means if the plastic is getting into the big fishthen it's getting into the fish we eat and very possibly getting into us.
Moore and other researchers are anxious about the plastic islands and hope to figure out what effect all that plastic is having. But right nowexperts say their research is still in its very early stages. What we do know for sure right now is that from 10000 to 35000 tons of plastic is floating on the surface of our oceans. And we humans put it theresaid Moore.
ƪ ƯԼӰ 5What can we learn from the first paragraph?
APlastic has a terrible effect on people's life. BGood use has been made of plastic in people's life. CPlastic products should not be used in school cafeteria. DPlastic is widely used and can be seen almost everywhere.
