Some people cannot learn in ordinary schools. Often some physical or mental handicap prevents a child from learning. In education today new methods are being used in special schools to help the handicapped.

Among the many interesting schools for handicapped people, there is one which is being established in the southern part of New Jersey. It is called the Bancroft Community. Here handicapped young adults will be trained to support themselves and to get along in the outside world.

The Bancroft Community is not surrounded by walls of any kind. Its director, John R. Tullis, insists that it be open so that the students may gradually develop normal relations with the rest of the world.

Bancroft Community students will live in apartments or in a house, cooking their own meals, washing their own clothes, and learning to perform other tasks. Gradually as they become able, they will buy their own furniture, paying for it out of their own earnings. They will pay rent and pay for their food, too. They will learn to expect telephone bills for the calls they make every month.

Q 12: Why can't some people learn in common schools? Q 13: What is absent from the Bancroft Community? Q 14: What can be inferred from the passage? Q 15: What should the students do every month?
