The sun is our greatest source of energy. We have started to use this energy only recently, though.

The sun can heat houses. Solar heat can keep a house warm even when it is cold outside. Large windows, sun-rooms, and solar greenhouses all collect the sun's heat. Solar collectors can be placed on a roof, a wall, or anywhere the sun shines. Collectors can be made to store extra heat for times when there is no sun.

The sun heats water, too. Pipe systems are put on roofs and the sun heats the water pipes. House roofs should slant (倾斜) towards the south.

In a house that is built especially for solar heat, most of the rooms face south. The southern wall has double sheets of glass. The sheets are divided by a half-inch of space. This space reduces the amount of heat that escapes. The sun can still enter, though.

Solar energy can be used for cooking, too. Dr Maria Telkes invented a simple stove that looks like a tightly insulated (绝缘的) box. The stove slants towards the sun. Four flat mirrors fan out from it. These mirrors reflectsunlight into the inside of the stove, which is filled with a heat-absorbent salt. Its temperature can be regulated by moving the mirrors. Because it stores up heat, the stove can be used after sunset.

Solar energy is expected to become cheaper and more common in the future. Then it will be able to compete with oil and gas as a major source of energy.

46. The best title of this passage would be “ ________ ”. A. Cooking with Solar Energy

B. Comparing Different Types of Energy

C. Several Major Sources of Energy D. Solar Energy, Today and Tomorrow

47. Solar houses can be identified by their ________ . A. cost B. construction C. size D. simple stove

48. The underlined word “reflect” in Paragraph 5 means “ ________ ”. A. throw back B. come about C. grow up D. make out

49. How does Dr Telkes' stove store the heat of the sunlight? A. By using a heat-absorbent salt. B. With the mirrors above the stove. C. By the insulated box. D. Through a pipe system.

50. Who would NOT welcome the growth of solar energy? A. Farmers. B. Houseowners.

C. Oil companies. D. Construction companies.

No one really knows why we sleep. There are two theories, but a theory is only an idea or a guess. Even scientists don't know if these theories are correct or not.

One theory of sleep is called the “Repair Theory.” This theory says that during the day we use many important chemicals in our bodies and brains. We need sleep to make new chemicals which we will use the following day. (64) One piece of evidence for this theory is that our bodies produce more of a growth hormone (a chemical that helps us grow) while we sleep.

Another theory is called the “Adaptive Theory.” This theory says that sleep developed gradually and naturally because it stopped early humans and animals from wasting energy and putting themselves in danger from the other animals that killed and ate them; in other words, sleep kept them safe and out of trouble. It was necessary for their survival.

Whatever the reason for sleep, everyone sleeps and everyone dreams every night. Many times we don't remember our dreams, but we still dream. Like sleep, no one knows exactly why we dream or what dreams mean. There have been many theories about dreams throughout history. Many cultures believe that dreams can foretell the future that they can tell us what is going to happen to us. Sigmund Freud and other psychologists and psychiatrists (精神病学家) believe that dreams tell us about our feelings and desires.

(65) However, some scientists now believe that dreams mean nothing at all—dreams are caused by the electrical activity in our brains while we sleep. These scientists believe that nerve cells fire aimlessly and our brains try to make a story out of these meaningless patterns. These scientists say that dreams seem crazy and without meaning sometimes because they are crazy and without any meaning at all.

Questions 60—63: The table below shows different theories of sleep and dreams. Fill in the blanks to complete the table.

Sandra and Lucy worked together. They were friends although they were very different from each other. Sandra was not afraid to speak her mind. When her manager gave her something to do, she always wanted to know why it had to be done. Often she got other people to do the work for her.

Sometimes she got angry and raised her voice. She told people what they were doing wrong, and then told them to do it the way she wanted it done. Most of her co-workers thought she was aggressive (放肆的;霸道的), and they were a little afraid of her.

Lucy, on the other hand, was much more timid (胆小的). She didn't like arguments and tried to avoid them. She was happiest when the manager gave her something to do and told her exactly how to do it. She rarely got upset and was always calm. She never complained.

She enjoyed working in the office, and her co-workers all said she did her job very well. Sandra liked her because she never argued with her.

The manager reviewed how well the workers did their jobs. The manager gave them a written report on their work, and then interviewed them about the report. The office workers were nervous when it was time to go in for their interviews.

Lucy went in to the interview room first. The manager was happy with her work. He was impressed because she always completed her work in time. Lucy was very pleased with her report.

Then it was Sandra's turn. Lucy waited for her outside the interview room. She could hear that Sandra was getting upset and raising her voice. After a while it was quiet again.

When Sandra came out, Lucy asked her how it went.

“Well,” said Sandra, “the report said I was aggressive but I made him take that part out!”

B) One possible version:

The idea of living on the moon is no longer science fiction. However, there will be drawbacks to living there as well as advantages.

On the positive side, people will be able to escape from the earth's overcrowded cities, and will have wonderful clear views of the earth and stars.

On the other hand, the moon is an unfriendly place for humans. First of all, people will have to wear special suits and if their equipment fails, they will probably die. Secondly, they will have to get used to being weightless. Finally, they will probably miss the plants and wildlife that exist on the earth.

In all, the moon might be the ideal place for a holiday or for scientists to carry out research, but not for ordinary people to live on all the time.
