Passage 10

Many friendships are made at school, and it’s important to find friends that share your interests.

The following tips may be helpful in having a good social life at high school.

Stay close to your old friends. However, you shouldn’t be afraid to make new ones. Meeting just one new person can lead you to many more friends and fun times. Be open to try this out. It may work better than you think.

Join a team or a club. You will meet people with similar interests. You may want to try a club or sport that you’ve never tried before, and you may find that you really like it. But if you don’t like it, try another group, as there are many around to choose from.

Become confident and outgoing. Confidence attracts people and if you stay confident about yourself, you’ll soon have many friends to be around. Don’t be afraid to go up to someone and introduce yourself.

Be yourself. Acting like someone that you’re not will only get you into trouble later on. People may like the fake(虚伪的)side of you at first, but they’ll soon discover it is all an act and then you’ll lose many friends you really like.

Change your looks. If you want a change, consider a new haircut or new clothes. Changing the way you look can bring out confidence you never knew you had.

Passage 11

Playing a musical instrument can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It’s a good way to express feelings and develop confidence with your ability. If you want to learn a musical instrument, you might face a problem: what to play? Here are a few questions to help you decide it.

What kind of music do you like?

What you are interested in can encourage you to play. A piece of music might move you more

than another. Traditional orchestra(交响乐) musical instruments are what you hear in classical music. Modern music calls for modern instruments, like electric guitars.

Where are you going to practice?

Practicing the drums, for example, can drive your neighbors crazy. Think about where and when you are going to practice, as well as the patience of the people you live with or near. Some instruments like the guitar give you the chance of playing in the night using earphones, while your housemates sleep in peace. Also, you may need to consider going to a school or a music center to practice.

How much money can you spend?

This is quite a big problem. A lot of instruments can be bought in different price ranges. But this

doesn’t change the fact that many instruments, such as the piano, are always expensive. If you can’t afford your chosen instrument, will you be able to borrow someone else’s?
