all. 33 For example, the central part of Antarctica receives an average of less than 2 inches of snow every year. The coastline of Antarctica receives a little bit more—between 7 and 8 inches a year. Because Antarctica gets so little precipitation every year, it is considered a desert. When precipitation falls in hot deserts, it quickly evaporates (蒸发) back into the atmosphere. 34 Due to this low rate of evaporation, most of the snow that falls to the ground remains there permanently, eventually building up into thick ice sheets. Any snow that does not freeze into ice sheets becomes caught up in the strong winds that constantly blow over Antarctica. 35 Even though snowfall is very rare there, snowstorms are actually very common on Antarctica.
These snow-filled winds can make it look as if it is snowing.
This is evident in the low precipitation statistics recorded for Antarctica. In order for an area to be considered a desert, it must receive very little rainfall.
Parts of Antarctica show signs of warming up with global climate change, however. Despite the low snowfall, vast glaciers (冰川) cover 99 percent of Antarctica’s surface. When you imagine the desert, you probably think of a very hot place covered with sand. The air over Antarctica is too cold to hold water drops and thus there is little evaporation. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分45分)

When tragedy struck his little girl during the Depression (大萧条), this father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again. The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a puddle (水坑) after a rainstorm and suddenly felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on them. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away—never knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was. An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I returned home, I couldn’t walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them... but I couldn’t. I felt so left out despite my parents’ company. My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a tricycle (三轮车) to get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an extravagance (奢侈品). Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. Dad couldn’t afford a car and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat to work at Heinz Electric. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a cripple (瘸子) all my life. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Dear Miss Yang,
I’m writing to express my gratitude to you for what you have done for me. I’m lucky to have you as my
English teacher. English is never an easy subject for me. And I’m not a smart or confident guy who can manage
all that stress. But you never label or ignore me. Instead, you have helped me through all the difficulties with your
patience and devotion. I hope in the future I can do the same for others, always ready to reach out.
With the note is a sweet chocolate bar. Wish you as sweet a life.
Then one day, while sitting at my usual place in the window, I saw my father walking up the street carrying a tricycle on his shoulder. With the biggest smile, he picked me up and put me on the tricycle and taught me to ride it. Dad kept me company on my rides up and down the long hallway in our house. He made sure I rode for hours every day. He didn't mind that I banged into the walls and put gouges(坑) in the door. He wanted to see me walk. Gradually, I was able to put my feet down without pain and then began to take my first steps.
It was many years later before I learned where and how he had got the tricycle. Dad had approached Jack, the owner of a secondhand store in our neighborhood, and told him about my injuries and how I watched the children playing with such a sad face. Jack took my father's winter coat in exchange for the tricycle. I shook every time I think of those winter days when he had to walk 7 miles to work without his winter coat. But I can still picture his smile the day he carried home the tricycle on his shoulders. The first steps toward my recovery were really taken by Dad.
