The answer to protecting and saving marine (海洋) wildlife can start with cutting back on something Americans use every day—plastic drinking straws. Actor Adrien Grenier, best known for playing Vincent Chase in the 2015 movie Entourage, has launched a campaign to reduce the amount of single-use plastic usage in this country in order to protect and save marine wildlife and the environment. Plastic drinking straws are among many single-use plastic products

contributing to the shocking loss of marine life, but they’re a great place to start because they’re something Americans are using by the hundreds of millions without any awareness that they’re so damaging.

According to Ecocycle, an international environmental organization, Americans use more than 500 million straws daily, which are enough to fill 127 school buses each day, and they can’t be recycled. That means plastic straws end up in landfills or oceans, where fish and other marine wildlife mistake the small bits for food and swallow them. After seeing a photo of a whale

beached on the shore with a belly full of plastic, Grenier felt the inspiration to launch the Lonely Whale Foundation, hoping to inspire and educate others on the challenges facing marine life. Along with stopping the use of straws, Grenier hopes to educate consumers on the dangers of other single-use plastic items such as grocery bags and water bottles. While many Americans use these plastic products in their daily life, there are more sustainable alternatives that can help protect the environment. Ecocycle recommends the use of straws made from stainless steel, glass, and even bamboo instead of plastic. You can buy a number of these environmentally friendly straws online and in stores.

21. What is the primary purpose of the Lonely Whale Foundation?

A. To advocate a green lifestyle. B. To promote Grenier’s latest movie. C. To save precious natural resources. D. To encourage people to protect ocean life.

2

22. What initially contributed to the start of Grenier’s campaign? A. Plastic straws in landfills. B. A picture of a dead whale.

C. The severe damage done to the sea.

D. The disappearance of some species under the sea.

23. Ecocycle advises people to use straws that are _______. A. easy to recycle B. convenient to use C. useful to marine life D. harmless to the environment

Our first year in New York we rented a small apartment with a Catholic school nearby, taught by the Sisters of Charity, handsome women in long black gowns and hats. I liked them a lot, especially my grandmotherly fourth grade teacher, Sister Zoe. I had a lovely name, she said, and she had me teach the whole class how to pronounce it. Yo-lan-da. As the only immigrant in my class, I was put in a special seat in the first row by the window, apart from the other children so that Sister Zoe could tutor me without disturbing them. Slowly, she pronounced the new words I was to repeat: laundromat, cornflakes, subway, snow.

Soon I picked up enough English to understand horrible wars were in the air. Russian missiles were being collected and brought together, trained supposedly on New York City. On the television, President Kennedy, looking worried, was explaining we might have to go to war against the enemies. At school, we had air-raid drills: a worrying bell would go off and we’d move into the hall, fall to the floor, cover our heads with our coats, and imagine our hair falling out, the bones in our arms going soft. At home, Mami and my sisters and I prayed for world peace. In class I heard new vocabulary: nuclear bomb, radioactive fallout, bomb shelter. Sister Zoe explained how it would happen. She drew on the blackboard a picture of a mushroom and a cloud of dusty fallout that would kill us all.

The months grew cold, November, December. It was dark when I got up in the morning, and frosty when I followed my breath to school. One morning as I sat at my desk daydreaming, out the window, I saw dots in the air like the ones Sister Zoe had drawn—random at first, then lots and lots. I screamed, “Bomb! Bomb!” Sister Zoe moved around, her full black skirt ballooning as she hurried to my side. A few girls began to cry.

But then Sister Zoe’s shocked look faded. “Why, Yolanda dear, that’s snow!” She laughed. “Snow.” “Snow,” I repeated. I looked out the window cautiously. All my life I had heard about the white snow that fell out of American skies in the winter. From my desk I watched the fine powder dust the sidewalk and parked cars below. Each flake (雪花) was different, Sister Zoe had said, like a person, irreplaceable and beautiful.

24. According to Paragraph 1, which of the following words can best describe Sister Zoe? A. Devoted. B. Faithful. C. Ambitious. D. Considerate. 25. In Paragraph 2, the writer told us awful wars were coming by _______. A. analyzing causes B. listing vocabulary C. making comparisons D. describing scenes

26. Why did the writer scream suddenly on that December morning? A. Because she heard bombs exploding. B. Because she mistakenly caused a panic.

C. Because she thought bombs were coming. D. Because she got excited about the snowfall.

27. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. Snow B. Bomb C. Sister Zoe D. New York life

Spring Summer Fall Winter... and Spring is a great Asian film. Although few audience are likely to relate immediately to the characters—Buddhist monks (和尚) who live in loneliness —the movie’s themes about the changing of life and the desire for peace and redemption (救赎) have universal meaning and value. One can be a New York City stockbroker or a Salt Lake City teacher and still understand the points being made in the film.

The movie begins where it ends—with an aging man

instructing wisdom to a young monk. The film raises questions about how we live our lives and how actions, like ripples (涟漪) in the waters of time, can have unexpected consequences years later.

By describing the life of one unnamed individual, from his boyhood to adulthood, it covers a surprisingly large amount of the human experience, including desire, love, envy, murder, suicide and redemption. These things happen quickly on screen. We feel sad for lost innocence and

appreciate the accumulation of wisdom. By the end of the film, we feel that we have taken a long and rewarding journey at his side.

A lot of films originating in Asia don’t really show a world view that is all that different from that shown in Western films. This is one Eastern film that shows a world view that is very different from the Western view of the universe. In the west, we are all about justice and punishment. This film has some punishment in it, but it is more about learning from one’s mistakes and moral purification. The movie doesn’t just give lip service to Buddhism, as so many films do, but it presents Buddhist principles clearly. One way the film explains those principles is in a scene that would never happen in a western film. It is the strangest, longest, most unlikely police arrest scene that I can recall seeing in a film.

28. The writer mentions “A New York City stockbroker or a Salt Lake City teacher” in Paragraph 1 to show _________. A. the film is well received B. the theme gets across clearly

C. the film is intended for Americans D. the language of the film is no barrier

29. We can learn from the passage that the film _______. A. describes a famous monk’s whole life B. explores nothing but good human nature

C. shows Buddhism principles in a particular way

D. focuses on justice and punishment like Western films 30. It can be inferred from the passage that the writer _______. A. appreciates this Asian film

B. fancies Buddhism-themed films C. encourages people to watch the film D. praises both Western and Asian films

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A Desert of Ice

31 Although this is a good description for many deserts, Earth’s largest desert is actually a very cold place covered with ice: Antarctica.

32 More specifically, it must receive an average of less than ten inches of precipitation (沉淀物), like rain or snow, on the ground every year. Antarctica, the coldest place on earth, has an average temperature that usually falls below the freezing point. And because cold air holds fewer tiny water drops than warm air, the air in Antarctica does not hold enough water drops at
