Thirteen years ago, my brother died. I was in sever sorrow. I remember putting one foot in front of the other—things needed to get done, tass, completed---but feeling terribly empty inside. Four years later, I has still not gotten a job. My savings had run out.

In 2010, I began to thin about rebuilding my life. When I was out waling my dog, Macarena, whom I had bought a year after my brother’s death, I had the feeling that if I could get control over my hair, I could get control over life.

My hair has annoyed me for most of my life. It’s huge, curly and has a life all its own. I have countless hair stories that could easily become horror stories! For eample, once my mother too me to get my hair done at a beauty salon and the stylist gave me a cut that looed lie a monster!

Now, you see why mastering my hair was so important to me. I watched countless YouTube videos from a community of women who shared hairstyles, which was a do-it-yourself community I was inspired by. As I started to develop a more loving relationship with my hair, I realied my curly hair was teaching me a lot about patience. That shedding (脱落)is an important part of the “letting go” process to mae way for the new. Our hair is the only part we can cut off, grow bac, color, curl and straighten. The only thing we can change at will is to tell the world who we are.

Now I’m the captain of my ship. But for my hair, I would never have nown that. 24. After the author’s brother died, she _____________. A new study, a project of the researchers from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, finds the fitness tracer probably does not help with weight loss.

The devices are designed to record your physical activity. They are usually worn around the wrist, where they measure a person’s heart rate. The research team looed at two groups of individuals. The first wore a fitness tracer and too part in health counseling (咨询) with eperts to consider the best weight-loss plan. The researchers compared this group with people who only got health counseling.

The study found that those only speaing with the health eperts lost nearly 6 ilograms, but those using a fitness tracer lost only 3.5 ilograms. John Jaicic, the lead researcher, questioned the use of electronic devices for weight control in place of “effective behavioral counseling for physical activity and diet. ” The study involved 470 subjects aged between 18 and 35. Some of them were overweight, while others were considered obese (肥胖的).Over three fourths of the subjects were women. All the subjects were told to increase physical activity and start on a low-calorie diet. They had their weight measured once every si months. After si months, researchers divided the group into two parts one continued with monthly counseling, while members of the other group were given a fitness tracer. Eighteen months later, both groups “showed significant improvements in fitness, physical activity, and diet,” with no major difference between groups. However, when it came to losing weight, the people who only spoe with eperts lost nearly twice as much weight.

Jaicic said, ”the study’s findings are important because effective long-term treatments are needed to address America’s obesity. ” More information is needed, he added,to learn how to best use these devices to change “physical activity and diet behaviors” in adults who want to lose weight. 32. All the subjects in the study were ased to_____________. A. start on a high-calorie diet B. wear a fitness tracer C. increase physical activities D. record their heart rates
