I am Peter Hodes, a volunteer stem courier cell. Since March 2018, I’ve done 89 trips——of those, 51 have been abroad, I have 42 hours to carry stem cells(干细胞)in my little box because I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor(捐献者)to the time they can be implanted in the patient, we’ve got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.
I had one trip last year where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said: “Well, I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you-there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said: “In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient-please,
please, you’ve got to get me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me, re-routed(改道)me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.
For this courier job, you’re consciously aware that in that box you’ve got something that is potentially going to save somebody’s life.

One form of social prejudice(偏见)against older people is the belief that they
cannot understand or use modem technology. Activities like playing computer games, going on the Internet and downloading MP3s arc only for the young. Isn’t it unfair that older people enjoying a computer game should be frowned(皱眉)upon by their children and grandchildren?
Nowadays older people have more control over their lives and they play a full part in society. Moreover, better health care has left more people in their sixties and seventies feeling fit and active alter retirement. Mental activity, as well as
physical exercise, can contribute to better health. Playing computer games is a very effective way of exercising the brain.
When personal computers were first introduced, most older people didn’t believe they would ever operate it. Now computers have been around for a few generations and retired people have gradually become more relaxed about using them for fun. Gamers over 65 prefer playing puzzle games and card games. Kate Stevens, aged 72, says: “I find it very relaxing. It’s not very challenging, but you still need to concentrate.”
Another development that has favored “grey games” is a change in the type of video games available on the market. There’s a greater variety of games to choose from, including more intellectual and complex strategy(策略)and simulation(模拟)games. Internet Chess and Train Simulator are among the most popular. Train Simulator is based on real-world rail activities. Players can choose from a variety of challenges, such as keeping to a strict-timetable and using helper engines during a winter storm.
Some people argue that “grey gamers” simply don’t have the skills required for computer games, and that teenagers are better. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Most puter games require the kind of analytical thinking that improves with practice, which means that the “grey gamers” may well be far better than gamers half a century younger than them. In games where speed is the main consideration, older people would be at a disadvantage because they may have slower reaction times. On the other hand, “grey gamers” have a preference for slower paced, mind challenging games.
8. 7 he second paragraph is intended to . A. show the best way to exercise the brain B. stress the importance of good health C. explain why grey gamers exist D. teach how to play videogames
9. What was older people’s attitude towards personal computers at first ? A. Doubtful
B. Concerned
C. Enthusiastic
D. Supportive
10. The method the author uses to develop Paragraph 4 is . A. offering analyses C. making comparisons
B. giving examples D. providing details
11. By saying “This couldn’t be further from the truth.” in Paragraph 5, the author means .
A. mind challenging games are not suitable for older people B. children should improve their skills with practice C. playing computer games requires analytical thinking D. older people can perform well in some computer games
D
I was an introvert(内向的人)by nature. For as long as I remember, putting on a sincere smile when meeting someone had never been easy. The key to a sincere smile however, is simple. It’s for someone to feel excited. But that’s the source of the problem. When meeting people, instead of being excited, I often felt upset.
But we all know friends are important. The more friends you have, the more opportunities you will get, whether it’s job opportunities, a romantic relationship, or business partners. So a smile is important to make others feel comfortable. Mother Teresa said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”
The smile I’m now talking about is not to make a face to cashiers(收银员)or waiters. I’m talking about those wide smiles you make when meeting old friends. So I’ve discovered a trick. And I call this technique(技巧)“Oh, it’s Jamie!” When I meet someone, I imagine an old friend of mine called Jamie who was my first friend when we were still kids. It’s no secret why my smile is as wide as I can possibly make. And it’s not just the smile, but my tone and attitude that turn warm as well.
And the best part, whenever you’re friendly to others, they turn friendly in return. You’re not hearing this from me. Some research done by scientists actually backs this claim. So do remember to give it a try.
Three years ago at the age of 23, I took a long hard look at my life and decided that I was nothing. Tired of my life, I set about making dramatic changes and now
I have become a popular writer. My success reflects(显示)that nothing is too difficult if you try bravely.
12. From Paragraph 1 we learn that the author . A. found it difficult to show a sincere smile to people B. felt excited but nervous when meeting people C. became an introvert because of his surroundings D. didn’t want to smile at others
13. What do we know from Mother Teresa’s words in Paragraph 2? A. We can’t live without the help of our friends. B. A smile is important to make others feel comfortable. C. Many people don’t know the importance of a smile. D. People who always smile are sure to have many friends. 14. Which of the following sayings can we infer from the passage? A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Rome.
C A good beginning is half success. die.
15. The author writes this passage mainly to . A. tell us how to make friends success
C. encourage us to perfect our smile smile is

and saved the life of a premature (早产)baby in 1995, when the twins named Brielle and Kyrie were born in at Mass Memorial. They were 12 weeks premature and weighed just 2 pounds. The doctor told the parents the twins had to be separately put in the incubators(保温箱), and that the next 42 to 78 hours either of them could turn very quickly when it came to health condition. 17 Her oxygen levels dropped. Her heartbeat was racing and she began to turn blue. Her parents were completely lost and ready to give up hope.
Then the nurse Gayle Kasparaian asked the parents if she could try something new, something that would change the current medicine in the U.S. 18 The moment she placed the twins together, Kyrie put her tiny little arm over her sister in what the press would appear to be the “Rescuing Hug”. Soon, Brielle began to calm down and her breathing almost became stable. At that time, this newly-created skin-to-skin contact, known as “Kangaroo Care” was referred to as effective in treating premature syndrome outside America. At first the doctors didn’t dare to try the method for the reason that these kids were thought to be so weak that they wouldn’t be able to make it. 19_ However, Kyrie and Brielle’s experience was considered to be “historical” and changed this policy.
20 They went to the same high school and college. Now they are also working for the same company and are even closer than ever speaking at the same time and sharing the same thoughts.
A. Finally, the twins are living in harmony.
B. But apparently, the power of love isn’t just a fairytale. C. In their growth process, they have been sharing a lot in common. D. 第四节 书面表达(满分25分) One possible version: Dear Peter,
I am sorry to hear that you failed to make it in the US Chinese Bridge Speech Contest. I hope that the unexpected failure will not let you down, for I have still been amazed by the excellent Chinese you spoke when we first met.
As we know, speaking in public is never an easy task, especially when it comes to a foreign language. It needs painstaking efforts and patience. From my perspective, you’d better pay close attention to the formal use of Chinese words and expressions, which really count. Meanwhile, stay calm and be punctual appropriately when delivering the speech. Most importantly, you should learn from the mistakes that you have made.
Hopefully, you will never lose heart and my suggestions mentioned above will be of benefit to you.
Yours, Li Hua
