One day, I was sitting in a local coffee shop, and staring at this man in a wheelchair. He could move his head and parts of his fingers but nothing else. He had a servant who cut up his food and placed it on a special mechanically powered fork that he would use to eat.

He saw me staring at him and invited me to join him at his table. His name was Stephen. For several hours we sat at that table and we got to know each other on a deeply personal level. I had never known a man who was more radiant (容光焕发), more energizing to talk and get to know than Stephen.

Stephen used to be a very successful businessman in Denver. He was in the natural gas business. Thirteen years before, when he was forty, he was waiting for news of a natural gas discovery to occur any moment.

He said, “I had so much nervous energy. I saw the storm clouds gathering, and I decided to clean out the gutters (檐沟) rather than sitting around waiting for this gas well to come in.”

He climbed up the ladder to clear the piles of pine needles on the roof. As he backed up, he accidentally fell off the roof. He landed on his back. He was paralyzed (瘫痪) for the rest of his life, except for his head and his hands.

I asked him, “How do you do it all? How do you suddenly stop hiking, fishing, and running marathons?”

He said, “There are three things you have to do when something like this happens. The first thing you have to do is adjust. The second thing you do is adjust. And the third thing you do is adjust.”

Vega Blossom was planning to buy six cupcakes from Designer Desserts-Valparaiso, a local bakery that was having an end-of-day sale on Saturday. But after another customer fat-shamed her in the store, her plans changed.

Blossom wrote on Facebook that a woman waiting behind her became impatient and began complaining when a customer ahead of them took “FOREVER” to place her order. When it was finally Blossom’s turn to order, she heard the woman tell her friend, “Thank god, now let’s hope this fat bitch doesn’t buy all the cupcakes,” Blossom wrote.

“As soon as I heard that I BOUGHT EVERY DAMN CUPCAKE,” she added. “I SPENT $54 ON CUPCAKES JUST TO BE A BITCH.”

Blossom’s post has now been shared more than 25,000 times—and the bakery has since sent her at least two more boxes of cupcakes.

Adam Wiltfang, Designer Desserts’ owner, also expressed his anger about the other customer’s behavior on the bakery’s Facebook page.

“This is not at all the kind of thing I want to be posting on social media, but it also shouldn’t be something that takes place as often as it does. Designer Desserts-Valparaiso is a BULLY (霸凌) FREE ZONE and WILL NOT TOLERATE these disgusting

types of attitudes. Didn’t your parents ever teach you, ‘If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.’ Keep your mouth shut and rude remarks to yourself,” Wiltfang wrote.

He also issued his sincere apologies to Blossom and encouraged the person who made the remarks to “unlike (差评) my page and please buy your cupcakes elsewhere.”

Wiltfang told the local newspaper that he felt he must post something after learning what had happened. “It was so unsettling to hear the details of the incident,” he said. “We have reached out to Vega many times, thanked her for how she reacted and sharing her story. We have delivered cupcakes to her work every day since then.”

25. What happened before it was Blossom’s turn to order? A. She felt impatient and decided to buy all the cupcakes. B. She secretly complained about the woman behind. C. The woman behind talked happily with her friend. D. A customer was too slow in ordering her food. 26. What can be learned about Wiltfang?

A. He suggests people keep silent when they don’t know what to say. B. He thinks people should post things like this as often as possible. C. He was very grateful to Blossom for advertising his bakery. D. He stood firmly by Blossom’s side on this incident. 27. It can be inferred from the passage that . A. Blossom will keep receiving cupcakes every day B. Valparaiso is very popular for its healthy food C. Blossom’s behavior receives much public attention D. The rude customer finally made an apology

C

Over the years, the full Moon has been blamed for everything from a rise in violent crime, to causing madness, to baby booms (婴儿潮). But could it also be the reason some of you have found it hard to nod off this week? For once, it may not be those caffeinated (含咖啡因的) drinks or hours of screen time that have kept you awake.

Scientists from Basel University in Switzerland found evidence of a “lunar influence” when they carried out a study on volunteers sleeping in laboratory conditions. Their results showed that during a full Moon their 33 volunteers (who were not informed of the purpose of the study): (1) took five minutes longer to fall asleep; (2) slept for 20 minutes less; (3) spent 30% less time in deep sleep. But, interestingly, the researchers suggested it was not down to the extra light from the Moon, as they were shut in a darkened room.

The most likely explanation, according to the research released in Current Biology, was that somehow they were naturally attuned to the moon’s cycles.

What can we do if a full moon affects our sleep? In a word—nothing. UK sleep expert Dr. Neil Stanley said if the full Moon’s effects on sleep were because of brightness, then the usual things such as eye masks would help. But the study suggested it wasn’t about light. “It’s an academically interesting point but it is not particularly helpful as you can’t stop it from happening,” he said. “There is going to be a full Moon every month whether you like it or not.”

The research created a bit of a stir when it was released, but it still needs to be followed up with a larger group of individuals—and over a longer period—to rule out a chance finding. “It’s one of those things that you would instinctively (本能地) believe—so to actually find an effect is interesting,” Dr. Stanley said. 28. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “attuned to” in paragraph 3? A. addicted to

D. convinced of

B. warned of

C. adjusted to

29. To those failing to fall asleep on full Moon nights, Dr. Neil Stanley will probably say “ ”. A. Let it be.

B. Use eye masks D. Stop drinking coffee

C. Turn to experts

30. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The public showed no interest in the research when the result came out. B. The full Moon has been wrongly blamed for all the “lunar influence”.

C. Few people believed the full Moon would affect people’s sleeping. D. Further research needs to be carried out to confirm the finding. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

How to Live a Happy Life

Happiness is what we need most with the increase of pressure in modem life. 31 Fortunately, this is not the case. Everyone has the ability to hang on to happiness with his own efforts. The following methods may lead you to long-lasting happiness.

? Take exercise. Other than health benefits that are too numerous to mention, exercise makes you smarter, happier, improves sleep, and makes you feel better about your body. 32 Keeping in touch with nature can help you reduce stress, make you more creative, improve your memory and may even make you a better person.

? 33 Relationships are worth more than you think. Not feeling socially connected can make you stupider and kill you. Loneliness can lead to heart attack, stroke (中风) and diabetes (肥胖症). On the other hand, studies have shown that the longest lived people on the planet all place a strong emphasis on social engagement.

? Challenge Yourself. 34 Music lessons increase intelligence. Challenging your beliefs strengthens your mind. Increasing willpower just takes a little effort each day and it’s more responsible for your success than IQ. Not getting an education or taking advantage of opportunities are two of the things people look back on their lives and regret the most.

? Laugh. Laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and the feet. It can even reduce the effect of pain on the body. Humor is a good way to cause laughter. 35 A. Life is always full of hope. B. Spend time with friends and family.

C. However, sometimes it seems far away from us. D. It would be better if you take exercise in nature. E. Do something kind for the people you care about.

F. Learning another language can keep your mind sharp. G. Just thinking about funny moments or things can help a lot. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分45分)
