Abstract

William Cuthbert Faulkner is one of the greatest American novelists of the 20th century.A Rose for Emily is a masterpiece of Faulkner’s short fictions. It is the first short story of William Faulkner’s the Yoknapatawpha Cycle which is on the background of Jefferson.

In A Rose of Emily, Faulkner uses a lot of exquisite symbols to describe the fall and decline of the Old South and to reveal the conflict between the Old Southern values and the modern Northern values. At the same time, it incisively and vividly expresses Faulkner’s irresistible affection mixed with hate for the Old South. Therefore, this paper tries to analyze its symbolic significance expressed by the images of Emily and other characters, a rose, the old house. So that readers will have a better understanding of the novel and Faulkner’s other works.
