Quick work
Dan Robinson has been worried all the week. Last Tuesday he received a letter from the local police. In the letter he was asked to call at the station. Dan wondered why he was wanted by the police, but he went to the station yesterday and now he is not worried any more. At the station, he was told by a smiling policeman that his bicycle had been found. Five days ago, the policeman told him, the bicycle was picked up in a small village four hundred miles away. It is now being sent to his home by train. Dan was most surprised when he heard the news. He was amused too, because he never expected the bicycle to be found. It was stolen twenty years ago when Dan was a boy of fifteen!

Some people on the bank called out to the man in the boat. call up 打电话（给某人）

5. smiling adj.微笑的
He sat in an armchair smiling upon me. 他坐在沙发里朝我微笑。 6. pick v. 捡
pick up （偶然地、无意地）获得、找到、学会 I've picked up a bad cold. 我得了重感冒。
I picked up some French while travelling in Paris. 在巴黎游览期间我学了几句法语。 He picked up the book in a small library. 他在一个小图书馆发现了那本书。
7. most adv.相当，非常, 相当于very，常与起形容词作用的过去分词连用
It's most annoying. 这实在令人非常气恼。

一、被动语态
1. 何时使用被动语态
（1）不知道或没有必要指出谁是动作的执行者时。
如：The bridge was built last year. 这座桥是去年建造的。 He was elected chairman. 他被选为主席。
（2）当更加强调动作的承受者时，此时动作的执行者由by引导置于谓语动词之后，不需要时可以省略。
如：The room hasn't been cleaned yet. 房间还没有打扫。 The tiger was killed by him. 老虎被他杀死了。 （3）当动作的执行者不是人时，多用被动语态。
如：The window was blown by wind. 窗户被风吹开了。
The whole village has been washed away by the flood. 整个村庄都被洪水冲走了。 （4）被动语态的构成（以do威为例）：
