Don’t ask why a zebra has stripes

It seems that there could be several reasons behind the zebra’s stripes (斑纹)but researchers from University of California at Los Angeles US, say they have found a statistically (数据上)occur at once. The actual cause

① A spontaneous (自然的)mutation(突变)occurred in the DNA of an ancient horse, producing stamps.

② Later, zebras’ BNA mutated further, leading to zebra variants. Three species and five subspecies today. Ask instead: What do the stripes do?

Studies have shown several ways the stripes benefit the zebra:

Deception(取消): Pattern dazzles predators(捕食者)making it difficult to judge distance and find a target of group of zebras.

Camouflage(伪装): Vertical stripes blend with grass and trees. At a longer distance, they blur into gray.

Insects: Stripes break up polarized light (偷振光)that attracts biting horseflies. Social: Stripe patterns are different for each individual, which may play a role in mating and herd behavior.

51. The zebra may benefit from their stripes in the following ways EXCEPT that ________. A. they protect the zebra from enemies C. they easily attract biting horseflies

B. they make the zebra difficult to find D. they are different with good reason

52. This article is most likely from ________. A. an advertisement C. a literary work

Chinese people are, quite rightly, proud of their food. However, when foreigners like Britons and Americans think of Chinese food, their impression of it is different to what you might think.

Growing up in the UK, the Chinese food I was used to eating was food I now recognize as being from Guangdong. For example, a typical dish I would order would be pork in sweet and sour sauce, probably with some rice and spring rolls on the side. This is the type of food we generally eat because most Chinese immigrants(移民)to the UK have come from Guangdong. You can tell, because when most British people try to copy the sound of Chinese, they actually copy the sound of Guangdong people—hearing the real Putonghua is sometimes a shock to British people who have grown up thinking it sounds completely different!

B. a travel guide D. a scientific report
