PRINCIPLES OF PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

ԭ

Prevention and treatment of disease are two ķҽprinciples that must be followed in TCM work. Both ѭԭ򣬶of them are important components of the ҽϵͳҪtheoretical system of TCM. ɲ֡ I. Prevention

I.Ԥ

By prevention is meant taking certain

measures to avoid the occurrence and progress of diseases. TCM has always attached great ԤָDzȡһimportance to prevention. As early as in Huangdi's Ĵʩ⼲ķClassic on Medicine, the preventive thought of չҽǷdz\treatment of diseases\was advanced. ԤڡƵھThis theory involves two aspects: preventive ˡδԤtreatment before the occurrence of diseases and ˼롣漰preventing deterioration after the occurrence of 棺δȷͼȲdiseases. Basic Questions states:\䡣ʡָalways give the preventive treatment before a ʥ˲Ѳδdisease occurs and prevent a disturbance before δ......it starts?. Not taking medicine until a disease ѳɶҩ֮comes on or not preventing a disturbance until it ɶ֮Ʃ̿ʶstarts is no different from not digging a well ս׶until one is thirsty or not making weapons until źҹa battle starts. Isn't that be too late?\ˡԤһliberation, our government put forward \йҽĴprevention first\ԭ֮һҲҽpolicies of the medical and health work of China. ֹͷչԭAnd it is also a principle of preventing the occurrence and the progression of a disease in TCM.

1. Preventive Treatment of Disease

1.δȷ

It refers to taking various measures to δȷָDzȡprevent diseases from occurring. The occurrence ִʩֹķof a disease is related to both pathogenic factors ķаand vital qi. The former is the important ءǰǼcondition for the occurrence of a disease, which Ҫߵthe deficiency of the latter is the intrinsic ǼıҪfactor for the occurrence of a disease. Therefore, ˣδȷpreventive treatment of a disease must start with Ӽǿĵֿboth strengthening the resistance inside the body ֹаַʼand preventing pathogens from invading the human ʡָڣbody. Basic Questions States:\The body with vital аɸɡԤ

qi is never attacked by pathogenic factors.\ȡԤprevent the disease from occurring the following ʩ preventive measures mucs be taken.

II.ԭ

To study TCM treatment, attention should be paid оҽƣto the therapeutic principles which must be ע漲ƶfollowed in the treatment of disease. They are ԭformed under the guidance of holistic concept and ͱ֤εָTDS, and they have the guiding significance for ɵģԭȷestablishment of the therapeutic principles and ʹȷָprescriptions of a recipe. Therapeutic principles 塣ԭƷdiffer from therapeutic methods. The former refer ͬǰָָto the general principles for guiding therapeutic Ʒԭ򣬶methods, while the latter are the concrete methods ԭָµľ

of treatment under the guide of the therapeutic Ʒҽиprinciples. There are different kinds of ͬԭ磬therapeutic principles in TCM. For example, β󱾣аtreatment aiming at the primary cause of a อdisease, strengthening vital qi and eliminating Ѫˣʱpathogenic factors, readjusting yin and yang, أˣ regulating the zangfu's functions, regulating qi-blood and treatment in accordance with the three factors( Climate, locality and individual). 1. Treatment Aiming at the Root Cause of a Disease

1.β

By treatment aiming at the root cause of a disease is meant treating a disease on the basis of its root cause. It is not until the fundamental βζŸcause of a disease is found out that it is possible ĸԴƻto get to the essence of the problem and to make ֻзּĻa proper treatment. Basic Questions points out, ԭ򣬲ץסı\ʺƶʵơdisease of a disease in treatment. \ʡָβtreatment aiming at the root cause of a disease βis used clinically, routine treatment or contrary ٴʱλκtreatment and treating the primary (ben) and or αȷá treating the secondary (biao ) must be dealt with correctly.

Routine treatment includes the following

methods: treating cold syndrome with hot natured

ΰ·

drug, treating heat syndrome with cold natured

֮ߺ֮

drug, treating deficiency syndrome by

replenishment, treating excess syndrome by purgation, etc.

Contrary treatment has the following methods: treating pseudo-heat syndrome with hot-natured

cold-natured drugs, treating

obstruction-syndrome with tonification and treating diarrhea with purgation.

Treatment of the primary and the secondary

includes the following methods: treating the ααsecondary for emergency, treating the primary for α꣬chronic cases and treating both the primary and ͱ걾Ρ the secondary aspects.

2. Strengthening Vital Qi and Eliminating Pathogens.

2.а

Strengthening vital qi is to increase body

resistance. Since victory or failure in the

а֮ʤ

struggle between vital qi and pathogens

˼ļػ

determines the aggravation or alleviation of a

ᣬٴһҪ

disease, one of the important principles in

ԭǸıа֮

clinical treatment is to change the relative

ǿʢ

strength of vital qi and pathogens. In so doing,

ת

the disease will take a turn for the better.

Eliminating pathogens means getting rid of

аζа

pathogenic factors to facilitate and recover the

ָǿʢˣ

strength of vial qi. Therefore, eliminating

аͷһٴ

pathogens, like strengthening vital qi, is also

Ҫԭ֮һ

one of the important principles clinically.

They have the following methods: driving out pathogens first and then strengthening vital qi, ·strengthening vital qi first and then eliminating аȷаpathogens and strengthening vital qi and ͷа eliminating pathogens simultaneously.

Strengthening vital qi and eliminating pathogens

а໥䣺

supplement each other: the former helps the

аа

elimination of pathogenic factors and the latter

ڷԣٴ

helps strengthening vital qi. So, clinically,

ϱݼIJͬ

they should be applied in the light of the

variations of the cases. 3. Readjusting Yin and Yang.

3.

The imbalance of yin and yang is the basic pathogenesis of many a disease, therefore, ʧ༲regulating relative excess or insufficiency of ı䣬ˣyin and yang, remedying defects to rectify abuses ƫʢƫ飬and restoring relative balance of yin and yang are кʵؽƽone of the basic principles in clinical treatment. ٴƼԭTo restore their balance yin and yang are usually ֮һؽƽͨregulated by means of removing the relative excess кʵͲĵor invigorating the relative deficiency. Since ʵ֡ˣ仯Yin and Yang are the changes may be summarized as Ϊʧ⡣ the imbalance of yin and yang.

Besides, regulating zang-fu's functions and qi-blood relationship are also two important therapeutic principles. Space lacks for a detailed description of it.
