Later I married and had children. I began my first book while the children were still young. It took nine months. I chose a publisher at random and put the manuscript (手稿) in an empty diapers (尿布) package, the only box I could find. The letter I enclosed (附上) read, “I wrote this book myself, I hope you like it.I also did the illustrations. Chapters 6 and 12 are my favorites. Thank you.” I mailed it without making a copy of the manuscript.

A month later I received a contract (合同) and a request to start working on another book.Crying Wind, my book, became a bestseller, was translated into 15 languages and Braille and sold worldwide. My first book also became required reading in Native American schools in Canada.

I've written eight books. Four have been published and three are still out with the publishers. One stinks (写砸了).

To all those who dream of writing, I'm shouting at you:“Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Don't listen to them.” I don't write right but I've beaten the odds. Writing is easy, it's fun and anyone can do it. Of course, a little dumb luck doesn't hurt.

An experimental vaccine (疫苗)developed to prevent outbreaks of Marburg (马尔堡病毒) hemorrhagic (出血的) fever continues to show promise in monkeys as an emergency treatment for accidental exposures to the virus that causes the disease. There is no licensed treatment for Marburg infection, which has a high fatality rate.

In a study of rhesus macaques (恒河猴), 5 of 6 monkeys survived a fatal dose of Marburg virus when treated 24 hours after infection, and 2 of 6 survived when treated 48 hours after infection.Because rhesus macaques typically die of Marburg infection faster than humans, the post-exposure treatment window might be extended even further in humans, the study authors say.

The study, overseen by a scientific team from the National Institutes of Health and three other groups with expertise in viral hemorrhagic fevers, was posted online by the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

“Developing safe, effective, and rapidly effective post-exposure treatments for filoviruses (丝状病毒) is an important scientific priority for our Institute,”says Anthony S. Fauci, M. D., director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). “The vaccine used in this study is among several novel approaches to treating filoviruses that show great potential.”

The fact that three of the rhesus macaques in the current study showed evidence of Marburg virus in periodic blood tests, but later cleared the virus from their systems and survived, is particularly satisfying to Dr. Feldmann and Tom Geisbert, Ph. D. of Boston University. In addition, 14 days after infection, all of the rhesus macaques that survived showed moderate to high levels of antibodies (抗体) against Marburg virus. The scientists view this as proof that the vaccine worked as hoped.

This week is National Volunteer Week, a time for the Canadian Red Cross to recognize our dedicated (献身的) volunteers who devote their time and talents from coast to coast. Over the course of the week we will use this blog to share stories about our volunteers and the amazing work they do — a small part of the outstanding individuals across the country.

Take Saskatchewan for example. Last year that province was hit by wide-spread flooding, a hurricane and forest fires. Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers went to work right away and helped more than 2,100 adults and 775 children recover the basic necessities of life.

It's important to share stories from volunteers to truly appreciate what they do.Christine Hoffman is a Disaster Response Volunteer in the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan. She's a veteran Red Crosser for about 16 years. Still nothing could have prepared her for the call she took in the Recovery Centre last year in response to flooding in Maple Creek. This story is best told in her own words. This is what she said:

“I will never forget the first phone call I took in the Recovery Centre. A young man called asking what services Red Cross was offering in town. As we were talking, he told me he had a rope in his backyard but he thought he would be using it for other reasons.My_heart_stopped. I told him to come to see us so we could work together on a plan to improve his situation. He came in a little while later.Nearly two hours later he left standing straight up with tear-filled eyes.He thanked me for convincing him to come in.His home had been destroyed, but together we put together a plan and he was eventually able to move back into his own home.”

During National Volunteer Week 2011, let's thank Christine, and the many other volunteers like her. Thanks for making us proud!
