If you put your history notes under your pillow (枕头) and sleep on them the night before an exam, will you do any better on the test? Most of us have hoped this might help. However, _______ can't go through the pillow into your brain. But that doesn't mean you can't learn while you sleep.

Scientists aren't exactly sure how it works, but they have discovered that the brain can learn things during sleeping hours.

In one experiment (实验 ), researchers gave German speakers some Dutch words to learn. Then, they divided them into three groups. The researchers played Dutch words for people in Group 1 while they slept, without telling these German speakers what they were doing. The sound was low so it didn't wake them up, and only the newly introduced words were used.

Another group listened to the same words while they were awake. The researchers found the people in Group 1 were better able to identify (确认) and translate the words later. This was true only for the words that were played while they slept. The third group listened to words while they walked. The walkers did not have the same success remembering the words as the sleeping group.

The researchers later found that people had more slow-wave (慢波的) brain activity throughout the night. They said that more slow waves made people have better memory for the new words. ( )66. Which of the following words can be put into the blank? A. Ideas.

Most middle school students in the US go to school for at least 990 hours a year. This autumn, some

schools in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee will add 300 hours to the school year.

Supporters of a longer school year say that kids who spend more time in class get better grades. They

think that kids in countries who spend more time at school or studying are better prepared to start college or find jobs after graduation (毕业).

“Schools need more teaching time if they are going to prepare students to be more successful in the

21st century,” says Luis Ubinas of the Ford Foundation, which supports a longer school year.

Jennifer Davis, the president of the National Center on Time & Learning, says that many schools use

the added time to provide extra (额外的) help, like computer science and music.

However, some people don’t think the longer school year means that students will learn more or get better grades. A recent study by the Center for Public Education found that kids in some countries, including Finland and Japan, do better than US students on standardized tests even though they spend less time in the classroom.

Other people argue that adding time to the school year is too expensive. Many schools simply can’t

afford to pay teachers to work the extra hours.

Tina Bruno, the director of the Coalition for a Traditional School Calendar, says that kids need time

to play sports, take part in after-school activities, and learn new things on their own. “Before lengthening (延长) class time and taking away outside learning chances,” Bruno says, “let’s make every minute count in their present school day.”
