At that moment, mom’s words came to my mind “Everything happens for the best.” Dad offered me a car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport in Iowa. The program director, named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.

As I left his office, I felt sad. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”

I was waiting for the lift when I heard MacArthur calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game!

On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words again “Everything happens for the best if you carry on. One day something good will happen.”

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad; neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cell phones. To new comers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the translation of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It’s great.

School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).

“Everyone should just relax”, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing, has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nurberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mails, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than their parents.”

Linguist James says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents. They too will think this way. James argues that languages do not and cannot become corrupted. They simply change to meet the new needs.

However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write standard English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but learning to write proper English is a must for their future.”

Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, aged 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun. ” 36. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1? When difficult people express themselves, they generally want at least two things they’ve been heard and they’ve been understood. As a good listener, some steps are useful toward good listening.

The first step is cooperating(合作). How does a difficult person know that you’re listening and understanding? In fact, it’s through the way you look and sound while he is talking. You may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings. You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding.

When the person begins to repeat what’s been said, it’s a signal of step two turning back. It means that you repeat back some words he is using, sending a clear signal that you’re listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.

Having heard what he has to say, the next step is clarifying(变得明晰). At this point, you start to gather information about what is being expressed. Ask some open-ended questions, which will allow you to find out what purpose he is hoping to be satisfied with.

The fourth step is to summarize(概括) what you’ve heard. This allows you to make sure that both you and the difficult person are on the same page. When you do this, two things happen. First, if you’ve missed something, he can fill in the details. Second, you’ve shown that you’re making an effort to understand completely. This increases the possibility of gaining cooperation from him.

After you have heard carefully, you will make sure that his thoughts have been fully voiced. Ask if he feels understood.

When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and a difficult person becomes less difficult and more cooperative.

Topic Reason 58 steps on listening express themselves. ? 59 in agreement and make some sounds of understanding while a difficult person is speaking. ? Repeat some 60 that you have heard. ?
