I was 24 years old and a senior at New York University (NYU). At the time, I was planning to get a law and business degree and wasn't even job hunting I walked into the student center to fetch a Coke, but instead found a roomful of students. Clearly, I had accidentally walked into a job fair (招聘会). As I tried to walk across the hall, a man stopped me, saying\to work for IBM?\”
I ended up having a wonderful conversation with him about the company but I told him there was no way he could persuade me. I went out for dinner that night with some friends. When I mentioned this story, they couldn't believe I was foolish enough to refuse the interview with this amazing company! I went home that night, dug out his card from the rubbish and called him back.
After a series of successful interviews, an IBM manager called me to give me an offer. When I asked what the salary (薪水) was, he said something like 18. I thought $18, 000 a year was low. So I started
to bargain. He was shocked and explained that the starting salary for all trainees was set in stone.
The next day, I received the offer letter. As it turns out, I misunderstood the offer-I would earn $1, 800 a month, not $18, 000 a year. That was a great salary back then, so of course, I took the job. A few months later the manager asked me to be placed in sales because I was the only trainee who had tried to bargain over a starting salary! That comedy of mistake ended up being a wonderful22- year career(职业) at IBM.

A. Because he was not satisfied with IBM B, Because he was not willing to work for IBM C: Because he wanted to be placed in sales D Because he misunderstood what the manager said 30. What can we learn from the text?
A. IBM offered the writer $18, 000 a year. B. Donny knew the writer quite well.
C. The writer has been working in IBM for 22 years D. The writer was the only trainee in IBM

When I was growing up, my family moved about every three years. One advantage of this was that I got to see different parts of the world. It also made my family very close. I also learned to be pretty good at making new friends, and, to keep in touch with old friends, I became a great letter writer. But I was jealous of kids who stayed in one place. They got to keep their friends for a long time, It wasn't until I was much older, with children of my own, that I leaned that children's friendships can end even when no one moves.
Sometimes children's friendships end in angry quarrels(争吵)and hurt feelings, Sometimes friendships end gradually. Perhaps the most painful end to a friendship is the one-sided rejection (抛弃)——one friend turns away, or chooses someone else as a close friend, and the other child is left wondering why things fell apart.
The end of a friendship is often sad, but it's not necessarily a bad thing Sometimes it's just an unavoidable result of children growing up in different ways or at different speeds. The interest in hot wheels that drew two three-year-old boys together won't enable their friendship to continue when they're ten years old and one plays soccer while the other prefers chess. Sometimes certain pairs of children will probably bring out the worst in each other, and they're better off finding different, more suitable friends, Often the end of one friendship makes more room for other friendships to grow. 31. Why did the writer become a good letter writer?
A. To keep in touch with his friends B. To have children of his own. C. To see different parts of the world D. To make more new friends 32. Which word is close in meaning to \
A. Thanked B. Scolded C. Disturbed D. Admired 33, Which of the following is the most painful way of ending a friendship? A. Two children quarrelled angrily and hurt each other B. One child turns away without giving the reason,
C. Two children ended their friendship gradually as they grew up, D. One child moved to another part of the country 34. What does the writer mean in the last paragraph? A Children playing soccer can be friends
B. Friends will always bring out the worst in each other
C it's not always a bad thing for a child to end a friendship.
D Friendship for a child can be developed in different ways 35. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. What to Expect of a Friendship B. Friendships End Painfully C How to End a Friendship D Friendships Come and Go

Dear Connie,
I'm in Shanghai at last. My parents and I flew here last night from Beijing.
After we had eaten a wonderful breakfast at the hotel, we set out on foot down Nanjing Road, the main road in Shanghai, The weather was warmer than in Beijing. It was sunny and the sky was clear and blue. Next we walked on down to the Bund, the old part of the city with lots of European style buildings. The Bund is also called\商业的) centre with lots of banks and businesses.
We walked along the waterfront and looked up at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower across the Huangpu River. The big financial and trade area of Pudong is behind the tower. Dad visited that area fifteen years ago. He was amazed at how much it had changed.
Then we turned away from the river, walked down some narrow streets, and reached the Chenghuang Miao area. There are lots of shops, with artists doing things like paper cutting. After that, we ate a tasty meal in an old restaurant nearby. Finally, we walked into Yu Garden. It was so beautiful! I loved the long dragons all along the tops of the walls.
By this time we were so tired that we took a taxi back to our hotel to rest our feet! I've drawn you a map so you can see where we went today, Shanghai is great! I wish we could stay longer
Lots of love to everyone.
